I Must Finish My Course

When Your Assignment Matters More Than Your Comfort
“However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.” Acts 20:24
There comes a point in our walk with God when we have to settle something in our spirit: “I must finish what God has called me to do.”
There will be seasons when we are tired, disappointed, stretched, or uncertain about what comes next. But difficulty does not automatically mean the assignment is over.
When Paul spoke the words of Acts 20:24, he knew hardship was ahead. Yet his determination remained.
I am going to finish my race and complete the task Jesus has given me.
Sometimes obedience means continuing when the road becomes difficult. Sometimes faithfulness means trusting God when the next step isn't clear. And sometimes finishing means allowing God to strengthen you before you move forward again.
Here’s what I’ve come to understand:
Don't allow a difficult season to make you abandon a God-given assignment. You may have been interrupted, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you have been released.
Maybe you’ve had to slow down, rest, heal, or allow the Holy Spirit to restore your strength. But slowing down is not the same as quitting.
There are seasons when finishing your course looks like running. Seasons when it looks like walking. And there are those seasons when faithfulness means standing still long enough to hear God again.
Your pace may change. But your yes to Jesus doesn't have to.
Be Faithful to What God Gave You
What God has called me to do cannot be measured by how many people see it, applaud it, recognize it, or even understand it.
At the end of the day, I have to answer to Jesus for what He placed in my hands.
I don’t want to measure faithfulness by numbers, recognition, platforms, or applause. I just want to be faithful.
When this life is over, I don’t want to simply say, “Lord, I stayed busy.”
I want to be able to say, “Jesus, I did what You told me to do.”
That’s what finishing my course is about. Obedience, faithfulness, and keeping Jesus at the center.
Don't Confuse an Interruption With an Ending
This is personal for me.
Cancer was never part of my plan. Twice I received that diagnosis, and twice I watched God knock it out.
Jesus gets all the glory.
Those seasons caused me to slow down. They changed plans. They required me to rest, recover, pray, trust God, and depend upon the Holy Spirit in ways I hadn't expected.
My journey may have been interrupted, but the assignment God placed on my life was not canceled. And as long as God has purpose for my life, I intend to finish my course.
Maybe you've been asking, “Lord, what happens now to what You called me to do?”
Always remember, God is not confused about your life.
He knew the road, the interruptions, the battles. And He knew exactly what it would take to bring you through.
Sometimes we come out of difficult seasons with less confidence in ourselves but greater confidence in God.
Zechariah 4:6 reminds us:
“Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.”
I don't want to finish in my own strength. I want to finish full of the Holy Spirit. Fully surrendered, faithful, still loving Jesus, still believing His Word, and still pointing people to the cross.
Have You Been Released, or Are You Just Weary?
Before you walk away from what God has called you to, get before Him again. Pray. Listen. And ask the Holy Spirit:
“Have You released me, or am I simply weary?”
Because sometimes weariness can make you question an assignment God never told you to leave.
What feels like an ending may simply be a pause in what God is still doing.
If God says the assignment is complete, finish that season in peace. But if God says keep going, don't allow weariness, disappointment, delay, or difficulty to have the final word.
You don't need the entire map to take the next obedient step.
Stay close to Jesus. Keep Him at the center. Don't compare your race with someone else's. Don't despise your pace. And don't allow a difficult season to convince you that God is finished with you.
Father, in the Name of Jesus, thank You for the purpose and assignment You have placed on our lives. Holy Spirit, strengthen us to finish. Teach us when to run, when to walk, when to rest, and when to rise again. Give us the courage not to abandon what You have called us to simply because the journey becomes difficult. When we are weary, strengthen us. When we are uncertain, lead us. When we are discouraged, remind us that You are still with us. Give us the grace and faithfulness to complete what You have entrusted to us. May we finish our course with Jesus still at the center, and may our lives bring glory to You. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
If you are reading this and you do not know Jesus, or you feel far from Him, this is your moment. Jesus taught that to enter the Kingdom of God, we must be born again, made new through faith in Him. If you are unsure what that means or have never made that decision, I encourage you to connect with a mature believer who can walk with you as you place your faith in Jesus Christ, grow as His disciple, be baptized, and begin your new life in Him.
Get planted. Find a Bible-teaching, Holy Spirit-filled church family that will pray for you, love you, disciple you, and walk alongside you. Pursue Jesus with your whole heart and watch Him transform your life.
